Summer Camp Guide
Summer Day Camps Offer
Great Experience for Children
Summer camps being just for the arts
and craft lover are over. Today there are day camps available for
every interest. While your sports enthusiast can learn kayaking or
rock climbing, your budding writer can learn how to become a news
reporter. When considering enrolling your child into a summer day
camp it’s important to know why summer day camps are so important
and what’s available.
Children will build on their skill.
Your child will build social skills by
making new friends and meeting new people and learning about their
community on trips provided by some day camps. They can play games
and sports that will teach them to cooperate, play fair, build
character and have fun at sports camps.
Whether your are seeking a safe place for your children to go
during school break or looking to encourage exploration, your
child will learn skills that will last a lifetime. Camps are a
great way to build confidence and foster your child’s sense of
self.
Children can do Career Exploration.
Our community offers different forms
of career exploration classes for young enthusiasts. Great
Explorations in St. Petersburg offers a wide selection of camps
for children. You may contact our local colleges and school system
to see what’s available for your child interests.
Children have opportunities for some new experiences.
While traditional day camps are still
plentiful, there are some adventures your child can take that are
a little more off the beaten path. Two examples of such an
experience is Tampa Bay Watch (TBW) and Camp Chabad.
For the first tine TBW’s environmental organization is offering
summer camps. TBW’s location is surrounded by mangroves,
grassflats, and shallow waters teeming with marine life, will
provide campers with exciting, hands-on opportunities to learn
about marine ecology. Throughout the week, campers will learn how
they can help protect Tampa Bay and restore its marine habitats.
Camp Chabad offer campers a deep sense of pride in their heritage
and a love for Judaism and Israel. Children
There are day camps for all ages and interests including sports,
arts and educational. Your child should try new experiences at
camp.
Children should always have a Fun Times.
Make sure to get your child in on the
decision of what type of camp they will attend. That way they will
discover new areas that interest them as well as engaging in some
they are familiar with. Regardless of what your child participates
in this summer think of it as an adventure where they will gain
skills that will last long after summer has faded. Summer camp is
a chance to explore new ideas, new opportunities and find new
challenges or interests.
Children Do Form Special Bonds At
Camp
Susan Wright, the mother of a
handicapped girl, gets teary-eyed every time she tells the story
of her young, physically disabled daughter who attended a horse
camp last year.
"She was going into fourth grade," she recalls. "That is not an
easy time, especially because her daughter was so shy."
It was at the beginning, the traditional introduction get to know
you phase. The disabled girl was shy and had to introduce herself,
which was very difficult for her, Smith says. The counselor tried
a game to make all the kids feel a little more at ease with their
introductions.
When she reached the handicapped girl, it was hard for her to get
past her name. Then another girl came to her rescue by asking the
handicapped girl questions like “what school do you go to?”, “What
grade are you in?” It was exactly what the little girl needed to
help her get started and to overcome her fear. It was for everyone
- including the kids waiting their turn. "The counselors watched
the whole thing unfold from the sidelines," Smith says. "We knew
what was going on, and it was amazing. This young girl had made a
friendship with the little handicapped girl, and they knew what it
meant for her to open up. Even during one of the most terrifying
games of the summer, they understood that friendship and kindness
was more important than the points in a game."
Of course, it takes the right atmosphere to foster that kind of
friendship. To that end, most camp counselors are trained to make
sure that campers start making friends as soon as they arrive.
They introduce campers to one another. They plan get-to-know-you
games. And they watch out for kids who aren't making friends
quickly. Camp staff members know that the kids need to work and
play together, contribute and cooperate with each other. They also
know that making friends is a lot easier when the campers have a
trained facilitator looking out for them.
"When I train my counselors, we talk about these things,"
Katherine Johnson says. "Each child is important, and the group is
important. It's not one or the other. It's both. That's what it's
all about."
Johnson has seen many friendships grow - and last for years -
among kids who met in her program. The kids participate in closely
supervised games together, and end up socializing outside of camp,
as well.
The connections are no accident. Johnson, who has two children,
knows kids can be mean to each other, especially as they get
older. But she has a zero tolerance for such behavior, she says.
"We don't allow any negativity," Johnson says. "No one is allowed
to make fun of anyone else. The kids are taught to support each
other." That doesn't mean a child is going to like everyone at
camp, but he or she will learn to get along in a positive manner.
Johnson insists upon it. Those who don't are pulled aside and
counseled, Johnson says.
The positive approach by the counselors can't help but rub off on
the kids, Johnson says, because it is all part of the atmosphere
and camp philosophy.
Wright says “selecting the right camp for her daughter, was
critical to creating a positive experience”. She chose the horse
camp because it was the perfect fit, a place where her daughter
could expand some interests, take risks and widen her social
circle.
"At camp, you're able to just be yourself," Johnson explains. "In
school, you're judged by how smart you are, how big or small you
are, where you live. But in camp, you're judged on who you are."
