Whether
you are jogging in shorts, vacationing at the beach or just taking
the kids to swimming lessons, every summer is a battle to remain
hair-free. There are many methods, like shaving waxing or laser,
to achieve this goal.
The most common method is shaving. Shaving can cause nicks in the
skin and is not recommended for women with varicose veins. Because
the blade of the razor is essentially cutting the hairs at the
surface, it needs to be done more frequently than other methods
and the hair grows back stubbly due to the blunt edge. Using
shaving cream or hair conditioner on the skin first usually
provides a protective barrier to the skin and produces a “cleaner”
shave. Shaving tends to be the least expensive method of hair
removal.
Waxing is a method of hair removal that pulls the hair from the
follicle, root and all. Waxing can feel uncomfortable, especially
to those with sensitive skin and during menstruation. Typically
waxing is performed in a full-service salon by an esthetician. The
wax is adhered to the hair and then a muslin strip is adhered to
the wax and is “ripped” off the skin, taking the hair with it.
Because the hair is taken from the root, the hair grows back
softer and growth takes longer so the skin stays smooth from 2 - 6
weeks. Prices for waxing services vary from salon to salon.
Laser Hair Removal is more popular and less expensive than just
one year ago. More than one treatment is usually needed but hair
growth reduction is typically noticed after just one treatment and
after a number of sessions, the area treated is permanently
smooth. A consultation is advised before entering into a treatment
session. Divine Dermatology located at 4800 4th Street North in
St. Petersburg (727-582-0321) is offering a coupon for 10% off all
cosmetic procedures & products (includes Botox, Resty, Laser,
Thermage, peels, etc). Just mention Families on-the-go magazine.
Although we all dread the battle to be hair-free, we all so enjoy
being smooth.
