Safe Operation of Personal
Watercraft and Jet Skis
By: Jim Fogle-Public
Affairs Officer, USCG Auxiliary, Flotilla 72
In one
year 112 children under 12 years old were injured on PWCs. Lack
of experience and excessive speed caused 60% of the accidents
when the operator was 12 or less.
Safe operation of Personal Watercraft
by children can reduce injury and death statistics by observing
the following;
1. Observe the maximum persons plate
2. Always attach engine shut-off
lanyard.
3. Always wear a U.S.C.G. approved
personal flotation device (lifejacket)
4. Never allow passengers to ride in
front of the operator
5. Always stay clear of intake grate &
water jet.
6. Ensure your child understands a pwc
is not a toy.
7. Scan constantly for people, objects
and other watercraft.
8. Do not jump boat wakes. (It is
considered careless driving)
9. Practice safe controlled speed and
do not create wakes that will annoy or hurt anyone.
10. Personal watercraft are not
allowed within 500 feet of a marked swim area.
Florida Law
requires that persons 21 years of age or younger complete an
approved boater education course prior to operating a vessel
powered by a motor of 10 horsepower or more. A person
must be at least 14 years of age to operate a personal
watercraft in this state.
