Hair-raising Horrors and Easy Solutions

Not Nice Head Lice

These tiny parasites are unfortunately a common problem among school children because they are easily spread. They bite the scalp, leaving tiny sores and terrible itchiness. One louse can lay hundreds of eggs called nits, which look like white grains of sand. Nits are most commonly found around the nape of the neck and behind the ears. If lice are detected, buy a delousing product at the drugstore and follow the directions accurately. Follow these steps to help prevent contracting head lice:

Don’t share combs and brushes

Don’t swap hats and headbands

Don’t share headphones

Don’t trade pillows during sleepovers

A Sticky Situation

If you find an ooey, gooey wad of gum in your hair, don’t reach for the scissors!! Go to the pantry and grab the jar of peanut butter. Work a wad of peanut butter through the hair until the stickiness is gone and you can pull the gum out. Then simply wash your hair. If this doesn’t seem to work call your usually salon and seek the advise of your stylist. Very rarely is it necessary to cut any gum out.

Oil Slick

You’ve gone through some changes this summer? The root area of your hair feels oilier than ever and you can even smell the oil in your hair? Usually when hormones start changing, your sebaceous glands (oil glands) start producing more oil. Washing your hair once a day with a shampoo specifically made for oily hair is a simple way to control the problem. You may also find you need to switch the type of products you use to style your hair. Ask your hairstylist for advise.

Oh - No, Hair Snow

Weather outside hot but the shoulders of you shirt make it look like you’ve walked through a blizzard? You’ve got dandruff. Dandruff is just flakes of dry, dead skin from your scalp. If it its severe enough it may feel itchy too. At the drugstore you will find many different shampoos to treat this problem. They usually don’t smell terrific but they work. Just be consistent and the flakes will disappear after continued use.
