The key to keeping your vehicle
running well is routine maintenance yet many vehicle owners
neglect this important service.
In a recent survey by the Car Care
Council they found that:
-
54 percent had
low tire pressure, which affects gas mileage. When tires aren’t
inflated properly it’s like driving with the parking brake on
and can cost a mile or two per gallon.
-
38 percent had
low or dirty engine oil, which affects engine longevity and fuel
economy.
-
28 percent had
inadequate coolant protection, which causes cooling system
corrosion and failure which can by very costly to repair.
-
19 percent
needed new belts. Worn or damaged belts can cause charging
system and overheating problems.
-
16 percent had
dirty air filters, which affects gas mileage. Replacing a dirty
air filter can improve your gas mileage by as much as 10
percent, saving about 15 cents per gallon.
-
10 percent had
low or contaminated brake fluid, which can cause brake failure.
Low brake fluid is an indication of impending brake problems.
All these items when neglected can
cause serious damage to your vehicle and ultimately higher repair
costs when the repairs are preformed due to a failed part. Check
your owner’s manual. It should contain a maintenance schedule
which will provide you with the recommended service intervals, and
if followed properly can save you money in the long run.
